Action Comics #306
was published in November of 1963, during the
Silver Age of comics. The comic contains two stories, actually... one
about Superman, and one about Supergirl. The first story is the main
(cover) one: a dictator kidnaps Clark Kent, notices his resemblance
to Superman, and forces him to pretend to be the Man of Steel (in
order to convince his enemies that Superman is his bodyguard). Needless
to say, much zaniness ensues as Clark pretends to be pretending, while
protecting his secret.
This issue is special because it portrays a somewhat famous kiss. As Michael Fleisher
puts it in
The Great Superman Book, "Action Comics #306 suggests that Superman
can perform feats of lovemaking of which an ordinary man would be quite
incapable."
In the 1960's, there was no real romance between Lois and Clark. Lois,
like all women, was obsessed with Superman, but thought Clark was a hopeless
loser. Much as George Reeves did in the 1950's television series, Clark would
occasionally take a wink-wink attitude with the reader; in this case, his gives
Lois a "super-kiss" while dressed as the mild-mannered reporter. Lois's response--
"where'd you pick up this technique?"-- is priceless.
Later in the issue, there is an apparent Lois-Superman kiss, but it turns out
that "Lois" in this case is actually an actress. The dictator, suspecting
that Clark is actually Superman (give that he looks exactly like
the Man of Steel, reacts to kryptonite, and has super powers) decides
to force him to reveal himself, by kidnapping a fake Lois. Ultimately,
the kiss gives the impostor away... because Lois wears peach-flavored
lipstick!
Incidentally, this isn't the first Superman-Lois kiss. I'll write up that issue (Superman #3)
as soon as I get the seven-thousand dollars necessary to buy it.
The second story in the book, which revolves around Supergirl's
encounter with an alien shape-changing race, isn't as notorious as
the first. In my opinion, it's just as entertaining, however, as
it contains many of the elememts that made Silver age Superman
great: the
superpets, Mr. Mxyzptlk,
the bottle-city of Kandor, the Phantom
zone projector, and time-travel.
